	HUMANITARIAN, BY DESIGN?

Humanitarian, by Design? explores the objects and technologies commonly used in humanitarian action—such as first-aid kits, tents, prostheses, maps and makeshift shelters—and asks what they reveal about the lives of those who rely on them. The exhibition examines how design, whether improvised or institutional, shapes life in situations of crisis, displacement or extreme precarity. From hacked plastics to architectures of waiting, and from crisis imagery to digital media, it sheds light on fragile and often invisible practices designed for purposes of endurance, resistance and hope. The exhibition was developed through a collaboration between HEAD – Genève, the Geneva Graduate Institute, the University of Copenhagen, the EPFL EssentialTech Centre and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum.

	THE INTERIORS OF SOCIAL MEDIAArchitecture, Space, and Technology in the 21st Century

The Interiors of Social Media explores how digital platforms are transforming contemporary architecture, focusing on interior spaces as sites of consumerism, display and mediatization. The book argues that platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Twitch and Pinterest do not merely depict interiors but actively script new spatial types: homes that are simultaneously private and hyper-public, domestic and performative, material and algorithmic. Through a deliberately heterogeneous set of case studies—including celebrity homes, streaming rooms, user-generated video games, humanitarian shelters, pet domesticities and porn interiors—the book demonstrates how social media collapses conventional distinctions between these spaces, linking them through shared regimes of visibility and image construction. In doing so, it reframes the contemporary interior as the defining space of the digital era, where identity, consumption, labor and performance intersect with new forms of technological mediation.Contributions by: Paule Perron, Michela Bassanelli, Damien Greder, Vytautas Jankauskas, and students at HEAD – Genève

		<description>
	NOTHING ABOUT INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE
Often dissident,&#38;nbsp;sometimes adherent, Nothing About is, in essence, indefinable because it is adaptive and fluid. Speculative or hands-on, this discipline –&#38;nbsp;if we can call it that&#38;nbsp;–&#38;nbsp;displays all the ambivalences of our contemporary lifestyles: superficial and profound, profane and divine, present everywhere and nowhere,&#38;nbsp;and&#38;nbsp;often regarded as futile, even though it could nonetheless destroy the most beautiful of insides.&#38;nbsp;This book brings together a variety of intellectual tools and&#38;nbsp;insights&#38;nbsp;–&#38;nbsp;polysemic and ambiguous, bespoke and improvised, ornamental&#38;nbsp;and criminal,&#38;nbsp;spanning&#38;nbsp;media, technology,&#38;nbsp;the arts&#38;nbsp;and other,&#38;nbsp;often undefined fields&#38;nbsp;–&#38;nbsp;that analyze&#38;nbsp;the&#38;nbsp;impact&#38;nbsp;of the discipline&#38;nbsp;on&#38;nbsp;contemporary design. In the end, what makes Nothing About charming is that this inside –&#38;nbsp;insofar as it is still defined as such&#38;nbsp;–&#38;nbsp;has only the humble ambition of accompanying beings, both animate and inanimate, within their environment, like a friend who is never far away.

	ARCHITECTURE, HUMANITARIANISM, AND SOCIAL MEDIA

This study analyzes how social media represents bodies, spaces, and architecture in humanitarian crises, contrasting the narratives of global institutions and celebrities with those of local organizations and civilians. Developed with MAIA students and based on content from more than 200 accounts across 13 regions affected by conflict and displacement—from Ukraine and South Sudan to the Darién Gap and Bangladesh—it reveals how social media reshapes humanitarian perception in two opposing yet interconnected ways: by distancing attention through passive scrolling and by fostering digital intimacy through close views of victims’ embodied experiences. Architecture emerges as an active agent in these mediated encounters, while algorithms privilege standardized, visually compelling imagery over complex realities.Data Analytics: (MAIA students in Interior Architecture): Matilde Arletti, Martino De Grandis, Maxime Joost, Lina Laube, Bianca Longoni, Hugo Maia Schmitt, Letizia Milone, Ailyn Pieyre, Célestine Potin, Paul Rigal, Lisa Schober, Kim Schönauer, Karol Szmigielski, Mariannina Thielemans

		<description>
	2084: A DIORAMA OF THE FUTURE
2084: A Diorama of the Future is an architectural speculation on post-Anthropocene challenges, envisioning a future where some cities lie abandoned while others endure extreme climate conditions. In this scenario, a diverse group of human and non-human explorers parachutes into the year 2084, navigating survival and reconstruction. Unlike 19th-century dioramas that romanticized nature behind glass, this project transforms part of Villa Bagatti Valsecchi’s annexes into a performative device, immersing visitors in damaged landscapes while confronting environmental and societal dilemmas. Within this large space, both performers and visitors take on the role of inhabitants in a changing vivarium, whose evolution challenges the relationship between vision, habitat, and climate change.

		<description>
	NOCTURNAL HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE
For centuries, architectural theory has been dominated by solar and diurnal paradigms. References to night in Vitruvius' De Architectura are scarce, as they are in the Renaissance treatises by Alberti or Palladio. However, the night has been, for millennia, a central laboratory in the development of new forms of space. This book offers a first chronological attempt at A Nocturnal History of Architecture, spanning over 2000 years across different geographies and societies. From the elusive darkness of Greek temples to the overlit American suburbia, and from moon-inspired Japanese aesthetics to Italian nightclubs, it reveals how the evolution of human beings and their material environment is inseparable from the night.

	INSTAGRAM, TIPOLOGY AND ARCHITECTURE
The Interiors of Social Media

Analyzing the most followed Instagram accounts worldwide, this essay investigates the role that social media plays in the contemporary redefinition of our material environment and its virtual boundaries. Operating within a framework of production/consumption, Instagram establishes hierarchies based on the success of content, the most valued body types, and the types of architecture presented for public consumption. From the members of the Kardashian-Jenner family to Leo Messi, and from Beyoncé to Cristiano Ronaldo, the most followed accounts predominantly feature heterosexual celebrities, reinforcing norms and stereotypes that are regularly framed within interior spaces. Addressing these interiorities through a typological classification is to recognize that they are producing architecture, and therefore spatial behaviors and norms.

	Screens Within ScreensTHE INTERIORS OF TWITCH

This essay examines Twitch's influence on contemporary interior spaces, delving into the interplay between architecture, online interaction, and digital empathy. From its origins as Justin.tv in 2007 to its rise as a dominant platform in gameplay streaming since 2011, Twitch mirrors 20th and 21st-century TV programs in which audiences watch individuals react to audio-visual content. The research highlights the emergence of a novel, seemingly domestic landscape: the "non-circadian interior," where broadcasts within screens neither depict time nor reveal windows or daylight. By analyzing the practices of leading Twitch streamers such as xQc, Ninja, or Pokimane, the essay reveals how live broadcasts and archival content blend with architectural materials whose chromatics, reflections, and tectonics operate within the digital topos of the screen.

		<description>
	VILLA CUADRADA
No other building better represents the dissociation between the facade as decor and the interior as domestic pragmatism than Villa Cuadrada. Originally constructed in 1904, its exterior resembles that of an Italian palazzo with symmetric proportions, while its interior is an accumulation of rooms whose disorderly plan does not correspond to any classical structure. The renovation project for the building recovers spatial schemes from the Renaissance that explore pre-modern domesticity: sets of connected rooms, axial symmetries, absence of corridors, and multiple trajectories construct spaces connected in various forms of privacy and collectivity. Ultimately, if architecture has largely reassessed the iconography of the elevation since postmodernism, the project proposes the interplay of classic domestic schemes and modern plans as one of the most unexplored issues in recent architectural history.
